Excelsior Public School has TWO Bands:

  • A training band where all new band members start.
  • A concert band which students would normally progress to after the first year in the training band.

If your child is interested in joining the band program, watch out for notes about this towards the end of the year, for the following year. The minimum commitment is participation for a School year.

The training band rehearses on Monday afternoons from 3.00 - 4.00pm.

The concert band rehearses on Thursday mornings from 8.00am - 9.00am.

In both cases, students are expected to arrive 10 minutes prior for setup.

Tuition occurs on Wednesdays at lunchtime - like instruments are grouped together in either the first or second half of lunch (so all students get to have a break and eat lunch). The aim is to group students, based on similar experience and ability.

The instruments available are:

  • Clarinet
  • Bass Clarinet
  • Saxophone Tenor and Alto
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Tuba and Euphonium
  • Flute
  • Drums and other percussion
  • Bass Guitar

Band rehearsal and group lessons incur a fee of $150 per term.

Instrument hire is $140 per year.

There is also a final service hire payable at the commencement of hire ($75).

At the beginning of term 4, children in Year 2 are given the opportunity to try the various instruments and given direction about the instrument to which they are most suited. Children in older age groups make a private arrangement with Mrs Cherlin to talk about the availability of instruments.

The Excelsior Band Committee are a group of volunteers who work with Mrs Cherlin to run the Band Program. This committee also comes under the umbrella of the P&C and reports to the P&C at monthly meetings. Professional conductors and specialists who tutor specific instruments are contracted for their services and we are so lucky to have their expertise at Excelsior! This makes the band program very worthwhile and increasingly popular!!!
